Candidate Alyse Galvin campaigns in Homer

Candidate for U.S. House of Representatives, Alyse Galvin was in Homer on Saturday and Sunday. Galvin is running as an independent.

This is her second attempt to unseat Representative Don Young who commenced his 23rd term in 2018. In that election, Galvin got 47% of the vote.

She sat down with KBBI’s Kathleen Gustafson after her appearance at KBay.

Galvin met with about 70 voters on Saturday at Liz Downing’s home and on Sunday, met with around 40 voters for two hours at KBay Café. Liz Downing was at KBay as well. Downing was serving on the Kenai Peninsula Borough School Board when she first became acquainted with Galvin who worked for the education advocacy organization, Great Alaska Schools.

“Now, I’ve been to probably half a dozen events the last few months with her when I’ve been up in Anchorage. And I’m so impressed with how strong she is, how committed and how bright she is," said Downing.

At KBay Café, people sat around a table with Galvin to talk about their specific interests. Health care and prescription drug costs, climate change and environmental protection, addiction and mental health were all brought up for discussion.

Norm Mosher of Homer is a Galvin supporter. He’s a retired Naval officer who has worked in Washington D.C. He volunteered for the candidate in the 2018 election and says he’ll volunteer again in this election. Mosher says he thinks Galvin can help lower prescription drug costs.

“If we negotiate prices for Medicare drugs, just like the VA is allowed to do for veterans’ drug prices, we can save literally billions of dollars. She's within reaching distance and I’m confident that she’ll go over the line and Don Young will be retired," Mosher said.
